How to specify a Versa Lift

Three decisions get you to the exact model, and they have to be made in this order, because each one narrows the next.

1. Measure your garage ceiling height

Versa Lift is built in four height ranges, and the model has to match the actual floor-to-ceiling measurement in your garage: 8–11 ft (base), 11–14 ft (H), 14–17 ft (HX) and 17–20 ft (HXX). Measure from the finished garage floor to the ceiling at the opening, not to the underside of a beam elsewhere in the room.

2. Check the headroom inside your attic

This is the step people skip, and it is the one that most often stops an installation. The lift platform has to rise fully into the attic space, so you need clear vertical headroom above the opening: 47–48 inches minimum for a Model 24, and 60 inches (5 ft) for a Model 32. Measure from the top of the joists to the lowest obstruction above the intended opening — a truss web, a duct run or a low rafter will decide this for you. If you have the ceiling height but not the attic headroom, the Model 24 is often still viable where the Model 32 is not.

3. Choose capacity, then controls

Model 24 carries 200 lb on a 15.3 cu ft platform. Model 32 carries 250 lb on a larger 28.75 x 56 inch platform with 35 cu ft of capacity. The practical difference is less about weight than about footprint: bulky-but-light items — holiday bins, luggage, camping gear — run out of platform long before they run out of lifting capacity. If what you store is mostly bulky, the Model 32 is the better buy even well under 200 lb.

Control type is the last letter in the model code. C is a corded remote on a hanging pendant — simple, nothing to charge, always where you left it. W is a wireless remote, which lets you operate the lift from the attic side or from across the garage. M is a fixed wall switch, the most durable option and the usual choice where several people use the lift or where a remote would go missing.

What to plan for on installation day

The lift mounts to the ceiling framing above the opening, so the joists or trusses have to carry the load. Confirm the opening location clears wiring, ducting and plumbing in the attic, and that the garage door and its track will not foul the platform's travel.
