Choosing a Garage Gator lift

A Garage Gator hoists gear to the ceiling at the push of a button, turning the least-used space in a garage into the most convenient. The line splits by what you are lifting, because the attachment — hooks, slings, cradles or a platform — is what actually makes the lift work for a given item.

By what you are storing

Bikes. The GG8220 uses hooks and straps to take bicycles straight up out of the floor space. The most common starting point, and the one that frees the most usable floor per dollar.

Kayaks, canoes and paddle boards. The GG8220CK handles a single canoe or kayak; the GG8220CK2 is a dual-power system for two; the GG8220CKP is configured for paddle sports with padded slings. The ProSlat-branded single (125 lb), dual (220 lb) and 4-kayak (275 lb) lifts cover the same ground at different capacities. Hull support matters here as much as capacity — padded slings distribute load along the hull rather than pressing on two points, which is what prevents deformation over a long off-season.

Cargo and bulk storage. The GG8220PL pairs the motor with a 3 x 6 ft platform for bins, totes and seasonal gear — anything that will not hang from a hook.

Accessories. Sling kits and platforms to reconfigure a lift you already own.

One capacity figure worth understanding

The GG8220 motor is rated at 220 lb total lifted weight, and that figure includes the attachment, not just your cargo. For hooks, straps and slings the attachment weighs little enough not to matter. The Platform Lift (GG8220PL) is the exception: its 3 x 6 ft platform weighs roughly 50 lb on its own, which leaves about 170 lb of usable cargo capacity. Plan against 170 lb, not 220 lb, on that model. Other lifts in the range carry their own stated ratings — check each product page.

Before you order

Confirm your ceiling height and that the lift's travel clears your garage door track and opener when the door is in motion — this is the most common installation surprise. Check that the ceiling framing above the mounting points can carry the rated load, and that a power outlet is reachable. Every product page lists capacity, dimensions and the installation requirements.
